Valentine books . . .

I was invited to read to a first grade class this afternoon. Rather than books about the holiday itself, I chose one book on friendship and another on motherly love. A story for bear by Dennis Haseley is a gentle tale of a bear and a woman who are drawn together by words in books. For some reason this story reminds me of small babies and books. They have no idea what is being said yet they still love to hear the story. The second book I read is fairly popular, I love you forever by Robert Munsch. I've read this one many times. It never fails to make me want to reach out to my own children, all grown and scattered, and gather them in my arms.

One of the perks of my job . . . I get to stop working and read! Oh, that is part of my job, so I am still working . . . woohoo!

On the last day of my Marriage and Family class one of the profs read "i'll love you forver" to us! I don't remember why, but I'm sure there was a point.

I know why. In its simplicity Munsch is able to convey the depth of love that a mother has for her children. Personally, I can't think of any other book that does this so powerfully and clearly. When I read the book to my students, I can see in their expressions that they are thinking of their moms lovingly. Many say that they have the book at home and still listen with rapt attention. Your professor made a great choice for the last day of a class on families!

Meant to add: Time to go to your nearest library or bookstore and read the book! Then let me know, will I need an extension ladder or are you on the ground floor....

We have this one, and it's signed by Munsch! Shane got it several years ago at a book signing that his daycare attended in Aggieville. We all still love it and Shane and I quote it often.

Oh...no ladder needed. You can just walk up the back stairs and into my bedroom! :) You might need a key though...

I've got one of those magic keys. Remember Santa has to use one sometimes. And I just happen to be married to Santa...
